Anistemi Publishing is a small, independent publisher specializing in the publication of literary fiction written by young Christian authors. We strive to uphold classic literary qualities of thematic depth, original artistry, and stylistic excellence. Manuscripts chosen for publication receive the full care and attention of our team: from acquisition through promotions and distribution. This guide aims to help prospective authors understand how our path to publication offers young authors a solid understanding of the traditional, supportive, quality process of publication.
At Anistemi, we believe authors should not be kept in the dark about the process of publication. The first ingredient for a successful book is trust and relationship. That's why our editors take a careful, educational approach. Working with young authors means that we want to help writers develop a clear, confident, and thorough understanding of (1) the qualities we look for, (2) what to expect as you prepare your first formal manuscript submission, and (3) how young authors can protect themselves from publishing scams.
Publishing literary fiction is not dependent on reading trends or publishing schemes to gain various awards or best-seller lists. Out goal is to create truly original works that enjoy healthy long-term sales because of their enduring quality and authentic originality of perspective, voice, and style. We stand for creative artistry in a world of commercial publishing, and that takes time, trust, care, and communication.
Publication of literary fiction is not a cookie-cutter process. It is an extremely expensive process for the publisher due to time investments; as a small publisher, Anistemi Publishing does not have the resources needed to publish a large number of books each year. We must be highly selective in our process. However, we strive to ensure that every author submitting manuscripts is rewarded with practical feedback and follow-up care. Our goal is to raise up voices and books that are as unique as the authors who wield them! Every author, and every book is inherently unique. The timing and details of this process takes on many nuances to account for each project, but every book published through Anistemi Publishing goes through the following stages:
CONCEPTUALIZATION - During this phase, the author submits a manuscript that helps editors understand (1) What story the author wants to tell (the ideology that is revealed by the culminating effects of all elements of story), (2) Whose story it is, and (3) The author's core purpose for telling this particular story. The editor looks for originality and ability to help this story connect with a wide readership. Manuscripts that are accepted receive a contracted offer and move into the next phases of development to prepare for publication.
DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING - During this phase, the editor and author work closely together to assess, tighten, and refine the big-picture elements of story: thematic development, overall structure, chapter and scene order, pacing, character development, worldbuilding, consistency, believability, etc.
LINE EDITING - During this phase, the editor and author work closely together to strengthen the stylistic elements of story at the sentence level: sentence structure, transitions, syntax, diction, musicality, tone, and mood—the elements that keep readers reading without interruption caused by distracting details that feel out of place.
COPY EDITING - During this phase, the developing manuscript is sent to a copy editor who specializes in the details. It is the copy-edited manuscript that is used to create advanced reader copies (so that marketing of the book can begin) and is sent to the typesetter to being production! The editor's main job in this stage is to begin generating interest with readers, book sellers, libraries, distribution, etc. The editor also keeps close tabs on all work and informs the author of all news, project details, and timeline.
PRODUCTION - During this phase, the manuscript transitions into production processes, starting with typesetting and proofreading and finally followed by book design, formatting, cover art, illustrations (if budgeted), printing (if budgeted), etc. The editor's work on generating interest, marketing arrangements, and promotional opportunities increases. Again, the editor follows all work closely and communicates progress to the author.
PUBLICATION- During this phase, the book is printed or finalized for digital-only distribution (per contract), and publication efforts enter full swing. Authors may be asked to do interviews, signings, and other promotional events. Anistemi staff is with them throughout this process. At last, the book goes on pre-sale on the website and through distributors. The editor continues to pursue promotional opportunities and keeps the author updated on all news, sales, and periodic royalty reports and payments begin.
As you can see throughout this overview, successful publication hinges on strong commitment and communication from both author and editor, and—except for the writing and revision work—all expenses fall on the publisher's shoulders. Therefore, we do not accept unsolicited manuscripts. Only authors enrolled in Anistemi Authors Academy may submit book manuscripts to us. Invitations are built into all courses.
Most of our authors are seeking first time publication, and this policy ensures thorough support and accountability by placing the publication efforts inside ongoing learning, discussion, and response. Writing a book is an amazing milestone! Publishing a book is on another level of achievement. Every level of Anistemi Authors Academy is designed to scaffold knowledge, confidence, and preparedness for publication.
Designed by our founder, Janie Barbosa, for her own daughter's use, the Anistemi publication pathway offers an especially appealing English learning pathway because it does not simply offer student writers opportunities for publication. It equips authors to understand the publishing process, understand best practices, and protect their work and ownership rights in an era marked by increasing opportunities and risks. Most importantly, it teaches young authors to view their writing as an act of worship unto their creator!
